as a female, i don’t think there should be girls in the nhl. rules for girls ice hockey are different from boys rules and they even wear slightly different equipment. the average girl is nathan gerbe’s size and the rules of the nhl would change when a 5 foot tall girl was checked by someone chara’s size. since girls aren’t as big or strong as men, one girl would get a concussion and it would either end a player’s career or checking would be removed from hockey. checking and fighting are necessary parts of mens ice hockey and modifying the rules to accommodate girls’ size and strength would result in fewer men in the nhl who would otherwise make it onto a team’s roster because it would be seen as discrimination if women were cut from a roster and men weren’t. i think that girls should instead have their own nhl, maybe called the wnhl like how there is the wnba for basketball.

In response to the anon who responded about women in the NHL: The point isn’t to bend the rules so gay men and women can play. A five foot tall girl would never play in the NHL, just as a five foot tall man wouldn’t. “If you can play, you can play.” That’s not saying, “If we allow these people to play we need to change rules to protect their fragile constitutions.” It’s saying, “f you can play by our rules, then why the hell can’t you play in our games?”
